Autumn 2010 Makeup Trends

Autumn Trends
Add warmth to your face in the cooler months with colours that are inspired by nature.

FACE
Aim for radiant skin and a complexion that looks fresh, healthy and completely flawless.
Nicknamed the ‘no make-up look’ or ‘skin that looks like skin’, the latest trend is for a flawless complexion that is fresh-faced and luminious – as if the skin is glowing from within. To achieve this look, first prep your skin with a radiance-boosting primer applied to all the areas of the face that catch the light, such as the forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin. Next, use your preferred concealer to diminish any under-eye circles, even-out skin tone, correct any redness or hide blemishes and irregularities. Using your fingers or a foundation brush, blend your liquid foundation into the skin so your complexion is smooth and even. A silky powder foundation can work for this look also, provided the finish is sheer
as opposed to powdery and caked on. Keep loose powder to a minimum.
BLUSH
Look healthy this season with cheeks that appear naturally flushed.
Cheeks should give the impression that you have just been for a brisk walk in the countryside. That is, naturally flushed, rosy and healthy. To achieve this sporty look, Penelope Klisser, Yves Saint Laurent’s education manager, suggests using a large powder brush to gently sweep tones of apricot, rose or pink on the apples of your cheeks towards your temples. Or, if you want to fake the remnants of summer, try contouring the cheekbones with a darker blush, or applying a light touch of bronzer for a hint of sun-kissed colour. For a dewy glow, use a highlighter cream or illuminator under the blush. ▶
EYES
Colour eyelids with chocolate tones or sprinkle them with a pop of bright orange or green.
When it comes to dressing the eyes, it’s all about colours that mimic nature in autumn. Think teal green, forest green, copper, bronze, walnut, chocolate, orange, gold and beige. Apply the eyeshadow lightly to achieve a soft-focused, waterpaint effect, or for a richer, more intense hue, wet the eyeshadow before applying. For a classic application, softly layer the eyeshadow by starting with a lighter colour and blending darker tones into the contour of the eye socket. Outline the eyes with black, brown or coloured eyeliner to complement the eyeshadow and finish with mascara. “If you wear bright colours on your eyes, keep the rest of your make-up neutral with sheer gloss,” says Neisha Henry, brand manager, educator and make-up artist for Smashbox New Zealand.
NAILS
Step out of your comfort zone this autumn with nail polish that begs for attention in a more subtle way than the bright colours seen in the warmer months.
